British actress Pauline Collins repeats her stage success as the character Shirley Valentine, a married woman who decides in her middle years that she wants more out of life. Leaving her spouse behind, she heads to Greece, where she grows close to a low-key, local bloke (Tom Conti). Collins and director Lewis Gilbert (Educating Rita) choose to let the character, as she did in the play, speak directly to the audience at times, and the gamble works in terms of creating a gentle, intimate atmosphere. Conti is a bonus, a warm presence and funny to boot. --Tom Keogh

Beware. Region 2 DVD Won't Play on US Players June 7, 2006

Please be aware that this DVD is Region 2 encoded and will not play on most US DVD players which are Region 1. You can buy player which will ignore the region code on Amazon - just search for "multi region dvd player".

This is one of my very favorite movies of all time. It has an uplifting, powerful message for ANY woman, but we 40-somethings will especially appreciate it!:)
I completely and totally agree with others who ask WHY isn't this movie available on Region 1 DVD? There are so very many of us here in the U.S. who would jump at the chance to have this in a format other than VHS!

Ah, the ultimate midlife mamma's adventure -- off to Greece for some olive-skinned romance with lots of cheap (but good) wine. What could be more beautiful!

This is one of my favorite all time movies!!!! I am so glad it was refered to me, I never heard about it at the movies.This woman is like so many of us BUT she finally Does her thing!. Against the family's desires. They are quite happy , to have Shirley stay as a mother of young children and a long over looked wife, never to leave it.She feels silly and even a bit guilty running off seeking her own joy. She knows herself and her desires so any surprise doesn't make her wavier. She reminds us to balance,Laugh and to go for it. Everyone gets used to a character role one might have over played but deep down inside is that spirit waiting to take a deeper breath.I will run off to Paris!Laugh and drink wine and who knows this ending? How about you?Remember ,we would be teaching ;a person does NOT curl up and dye at middle age. Instead it might just be the time that they honor their inner spirit.Take a little or longer adventure to become some of that person they might have lost for awhile.So this movie is about rediscovery.I KNOW YOU WILL ENJOY IT!
