Released amidst rumors of romance between costars Angelina Jolie and soon-to-be-divorced Brad Pitt, Mr. and Mrs. Smith offers automatic weapons and high explosives as the cure for marital boredom. The premise of this exhausting action-comedy (no relation to the 1941 Alfred Hitchcock comedy starring Carole Lombard and Robert Montgomery) is that the unhappily married Smiths (Pitt and Jolie) will improve their relationship once they discover their mutually-hidden identities as world-class assassins, but things get complicated when their secret-agency bosses order them to rub each other out. There's plenty of amusing banter in the otherwise disposable screenplay by Simon Kinberg (xXx: State of the Union, Fantastic Four), and director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) gives Pitt and Jolie a slick, glossy superstar showcase that's innocuous but certainly never boring. It could've been better, but as an action-packed summer confection, Mr. and Mrs. Smith kills two hours in high style. --Jeff Shannon

Description
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie smolder in one of the most anticipated, sizzling action films ever made. After five (or six) years of vanilla-wedded bliss, ordinary suburbanites John and Jane Smith (Pitt and Jolie) are stuck in a rut the size of the Grand Canyon?until the truth comes out! Unbeknownst to each other, they are both coolly lethal, highly paid assassins working for rival organizations. And when they discover they're each other's next target, their secret lives collide in a spicy, explosive mix of wicked comedy, pent-up passion, nonstop action and high-tech weaponry that gives an all-new meaning to "Till death do us part!"

2 out of 5 stars Another True Lies? NOT!   June 19, 2006
1 out of 3 found this review helpful

This poor attempt at re-creating the magic of True Lies fails miserably. Both Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie are extremely stiff in their roles as the stereotypical upper-middle class couple in appearance that are secretly government operatives. Of course their next sanctions are each other. Their attempts at murdering each other is way below the caliber of The War of the Roses and Vince Vaughn plays a poor version of Tom Arnold's character from True Lies. The special effects pale compare to any of the Charlies Angel's films or even True Lies which is about 15 years old. Better to wait for this one to come to cable than to waste your money on it!

4 out of 5 stars Great action/comedy   June 15, 2006

It's one of Hollywood's freakier genetic experiments: inserting genes from a domestic comedy into the DNA of an action thriller. The real surprise is that the result is not only viable, but lively and enjoyable. The action sequences keep it moving, but the humor of the over-familiar couple is what makes this really worthwhile. Anyone who's been coupled for more than a few years will recognize all the signs: affectionate gestures so habitual they're almost invisible, not-quite-listening to most of what's said, and the daily routine (or rut).

And the little secrets we keep from each other. There's no ill intent there, just things we don't want our other to worry about, or things that would be harder to discuss than they're worth. Like, for example, the little thing about international assassinations for hire.

There are no grand themes here. It's just entertainment - lots of action, and enough wit to keep you paying attention. If you just want to kill a few hours, Mr. and Mrs. Smith are the ones to do the job for you.

1 out of 5 stars A Sure Cure for Insomnia   June 11, 2006
2 out of 11 found this review helpful

Unless you just like to look at pretty people, this movie has nothing to offer. It is boring beyond belief. There is no story line!! Well, something might develop in the second half because we just walked away. I couldn't believe that this had as high a rating as it does. What I saw was meaningless, unrealistic and just plain stupid.

2 out of 5 stars nada after all the hype   June 11, 2006

I was expecting a lot more out of this film after seeing the previews. It was really a stupid film based on a silly storyline. Special effects with nothing to hold them and most definitely no real bystanders standing by in scenes. There weren't any police or security guards or everyday people standing by when the Smiths were shooting up everything everywhere. It's a romantic dream that only Pitt and Jolie would share. I was impressed with Jolie in Taking Lives & have now went back to my original opinion of her starring in surface movies where the acting is at a minimum. Same with Pitt. The special effects and shoot-em up scenes were continually one after the other and the cute lines fell flat.

whoever did the casting what a web they help to weave with Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Vince Vaughn (AND I'M NOT SPEAKING BAD OF ANYONE)

I didn't want to see this movie because of all the hype that was around it with the stars about whoever is dating or who broke up who, i want to see a movie because the actors did a good job. I took a chance and watch it and i must say it was pretty ok i didn't think it would be the whole cast had a great chemisrty and the action scenes were also great for me...
